Last month saw the arrival of Frontier Developments’ Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin. Suffice it to say that the launch wasn’t exactly positive. There have been mixed reactions to the game which has not met the studio’s sales expectations. So much so that the developer is refocusing on creative management simulation (CMS) games. Even if you are enjoying Realms of Ruin, can the new hero DLC help a beleaguered campaign?

The two hero DLCs for Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin offer up the mighty Stormcast Eternals champion Yndrasta, the Celestial Spear. Or the devious Orruk Kruleboyz shaman Gobsprakk, the Mouth of Mork. Both provide different battle tactics with the core focus being aerial combat.

Pick Yndrasta, The Celestial Spear and you’ll have a leader forged by Sigmar himself. Yndrasta is a powerful flying hero who leaps into battle to champion the Stormcast Eternals. Her legendary spear, Thengevar, can be thrown to disrupt enemies and inspire allies.

Gobsprakk, The Mouth of Mork provides the Kruleboyz with their first first aerial unit. Swampcalla shaman Gobsprakk soars above the battlefield on Killabeak, his Corpse-rippa Vulcha, raining destruction upon his foes and offering new mobility across the battle-worn landscapes of Ghur.

However, two DLC heroes won’t help what many consider to be a decent yet flawed game. One of the biggest grievances is how similar most of the factions are. What won’t help is the news that Frontier Developments now plans to focus on its CMS games which continue to do well. These include Planet Coaster, Planet ZooJurassic World Evolution, and Jurassic World Evolution 2.

While the studio expects Realms of Ruin sales to build over time it has made no indication of further support. With no roadmap and its new CMS focus, things don’t bode well for the new Warhammer game.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin is available digitally now for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. A physical version is on the way just for Xbox and PlayStation, arriving 27th February 2024.
